In July the DNA leadership board met with two representatives from reStart's street outreach team — a group of people who reach out to the homeless population in Kansas City by getting to know them and their needs.
The DNA board was most shocked to learn that each night in Kansas City, all of the beds at local homeless shelters are full. If someone looking for a place to stay isn't in line when the shelter opens, they're much less likely to have a place to sleep. The situation is even worse for women and children, since only one shelter caters to that population. Youth in Kansas City are also an at-risk group, and can have trouble knowing how to reach out an ask for services.
We understand that many areas of downtown struggle to know how to support, help or frankly "deal with" a homeless population that many times seems not to welcome the services provided by the city. We want to do what we can to help the existing programs help us.
If you know of a common gathering place for homeless individuals, contact the Street Team so they can try to connect with the group to better serve them. Call the 24-hour reStart Street Outreach Services (S.O.S.) hotline at 816-547-8487 to notify the agency of areas that could be helped by their program.
During the month of August DNA will collect donations of small items from reStart's needs list. Bring items to any DNA event or contact us to arrange a meet-up to donate items. (If you have large items, please contact reStart or donate items to the thrift stores listed on their website.)
